18 East is known for its commitment to crafting “handmade gear for the natural world.” Their latest offering is a new sneaker silhouette developed in collaboration with Mephisto. This partnership has resulted in the Break Spectrum, a low-top hybrid that merges the unlined design and signature side stitching of the Mephisto Rainbow with the rugged outsole and detailing of the Mephisto Break. Designed for both urban environments and off-the-beaten-path adventures, the Break Spectrum embodies 18 East’s “Slow Fidelity” philosophy, promoting leisurely exploration over hurried pursuits.
Two distinct colorways are available for the Break Spectrum: a “Beef & Broc” combination of earthy browns and greens, and a fresh white and grey option perfect for summer. Crafted in France from Italian full-grain leather and rough-out suede, each pair includes features such as SOFT-AIR shock-absorbing midsoles, Air Relax memory foam insoles, and an outsole designed with a robust lug pattern for optimal grip across various terrains. Additional stylistic elements include co-branded midfoot tags and an antique brass D-ring speed lacing system that allows wearers to customize their lacing preferences.
“I appreciate the concept of a low-top hiking shoe, which we’ve explored in various forms at 18 East,” stated founder Antonio Ciongoli in a 2023 interview with Hypebeast that introduced the silhouette. “The [Break Spectrum] offers a blend of versatility and sophistication, making it feel more like a proper shoe than a sneaker.”
