Quinta Brunson has introduced a fresh workplace comedy with Abbott Elementary. Set in a Philadelphia elementary school, the mockumentary-style series follows dedicated teachers facing challenges like limited funding, uncooperative students, and personal relationships, particularly between Janine (Brunson) and Gregory ( Tyler James Williams ). By the conclusion of Season 3, the couple finally came together, much to the delight of fans. However, Brunson hinted that their relationship might not be safe, depending on how the story unfolds.
During a FYC event in Los Angeles, Brunson expressed her views on potentially separating Gregory and Janine, stating, “I think there’s nothing wrong with crushing [fans],” adding that she wouldn’t break them up without careful consideration because she aims to ensure that the audience enjoys the narrative. “I want everyone to have a good time here,” she emphasized.
Despite the show’s recent success and the praise it has received for its characters and relationships, Brunson remarked on how “always is shocking” it is to see how invested fans become in these love stories. “It’s always what you want. It’s what you’re writing for and writing towards,” she noted, appreciating the audience’s affection for Janine and Gregory as well as Ava and Shawn. She acknowledged the depth of commitment that viewers have towards the characters, describing it as “really kind of amazing.”
To Break Up or Not Break Up
Comedies often develop couples and maintain those relationships. For example, Parks and Recreation featured couples like April ( Aubrey Plaza ) and Andy ( Chris Pratt ), as well as Ben ( Adam Scott ) and Leslie ( Amy Poehler ). Similarly, The Office showcased Jim ( John Krasinski ) and Pam ( Jenna Fischer ), who faced their own struggles, including a rough patch that introduced drama without a breakup. Although we cannot predict Janine and Gregory’s future, Brunson’s storytelling gives us confidence.
