Following Samuel’s ( Stephen Lang ) interaction with Saul, the first King of Israel has been haunted by ominous visions, which now appear to affect his son, Jonathan ( Ethan Kai ). Saul and Jonathan’s Visions May Foreshadow Their Deaths

Since the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, he has been tormented by dark visions of a future where he and Jonathan perish together in battle. This is understandably troubling for the king, who is already anxious about losing his throne to another anointed by Samuel. As Saul’s sanity deteriorates, these visions deeply distress him. In the sixth episode, “Giants Awakened,” Jonathan seeks to understand his father’s plight and experiences a similar vision. Both Saul and Jonathan perceive comparable scenes, with Samuel suggesting that these events may or may not unfold, leaving the outcome uncertain. This foreshadows a tragic event recounted at the conclusion of the First Book of Samuel, the source of much of Season 1’s narrative.

In 1 Samuel chapter 31 (also in 1 Chronicles chapter 10), Saul, Jonathan, and some of Saul’s other sons, who are notably absent from House of David, face the Philistines in battle on Mount Gilboa. Jonathan is swiftly killed, followed by Saul, who is mortally wounded by Philistine archers. In a desperate act, Saul instructs his armor-bearer to end his life, but the boy refuses. Ultimately, Saul chooses to “fall on his own sword.” This brutal moment culminates in the Philistines desecrating Saul’s body, stripping him of his armor and displaying his head as a trophy. This harrowing scene weighs heavily on David when he learns of it.

The visions Saul and Jonathan experience may depict this very moment. Given the nighttime setting, the specific enemy they battle remains ambiguous, though it is logical to assume it is the Philistines based on the season’s context. Jonathan is struck by an arrow, as is Saul, both appearing gravely injured. While House of David hints at this dire event, it does not guarantee it will unfold precisely as envisioned. Samuel’s words to Jonathan suggest that there is still hope for the young prince.

These Visions Influence Saul and Jonathan’s Choices on ‘House of David’

House of David presents these visions for a significant reason. The show has previously drawn from various biblical narratives, conveying profound theological insights in accessible terms for a broader audience. This shared vision could serve as a divine warning rather than a sinister plot from the Devil. The evil spirit tormenting Saul is a consequence of his disobedience, specifically for sparing King Agag ( Jeremy Xido ) in “A Shepherd and a King.” Samuel has made it clear to Jonathan that God has rejected Saul as king due to this disobedience, yet there remains a belief that Saul can amend his ways. Acknowledging his faults while relinquishing the throne might be crucial in averting the ominous fate depicted in the vision. This is undoubtedly what Jonathan hopes for.

In the biblical account, Saul meets his end by his own hand. Although he suffers severe injuries in battle, he does not die from them; instead, fearing the potential cruelty of the Philistines, he takes his own life. Some biblical scholars interpret this act as the ultimate manifestation of his lack of faith in God. Despite the hopes of Samuel and Jonathan, Saul’s torment from these visions may drive him to cling more tightly to his throne, increasing his conflict with David. Conversely, Jonathan has shown a willingness to forfeit his birthright, as evident in the penultimate episode, “David and Goliath – Part 1,” choosing to follow divine commands over personal ambition.

The tragic narrative of King Saul illustrates the consequences of turning away from God. Anointed for a purpose, Saul’s betrayal leads to profound loss and humiliation, culminating in his demise. As depicted in House of David, Saul’s irrational and ruthless behavior persists. He abruptly cancels his daughter’s wedding in “The Wolf and The Lion” and nearly kills Jonathan in a fit of rage. His recent reliance on Besai’s ( Eden Saban ) potion, combined with his escalating fear of formidable opponents, highlights his deteriorating spirit. As these visions continue, they serve as warnings, prompting curiosity about how Jonathan will navigate this knowledge and whether it will influence his choices as a warrior prince.
