Casa Azzurra is not just a getaway in Joshua Tree; it embodies a connection inspired by the effortless hospitality of an Italian summer and the serene desert landscape. Designed by architect Mirtilla Alliata di Montereale, who has a Master’s in Architecture from SCI-Arc and a rich background working with renowned architects, this project serves as a precursor to her hospitality brand set to launch in 2026. The home draws inspiration from her family summers in the Aeolian Islands, the innovative approach of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the natural beauty surrounding Joshua Tree. It is envisioned as more than a house; it is a space for gathering, exploration, and retreat.

Covering 10 acres, Casa Azzurra presents a unique architectural experience that harmonizes with its surroundings, featuring vibrant colors against a backdrop of desert neutrals. Every aspect is meticulously crafted to create spaces for both communal gatherings and solitary retreats, ideal for families, friends, and creatives seeking inspiration. The design balances sophistication with warmth, promoting leisurely mornings over coffee and long dinners under the stars, embodying Mirtilla’s philosophy that architecture should tell a story that captivates and transports.

The design of Casa Azzurra immerses visitors in the desert landscape, uniquely situated on a slope with expansive views of the Joshua Tree National Park. Its exterior, adorned with a distinctive cat-face stucco texture and five shades of blue, reflects the changing sky. The central courtyard, drenched in a vibrant blue, sets the tone for a design that continually surprises and delights.

Abundant natural light floods the interior through large sliding glass doors, showcasing rich textures and vibrant colors. The chef’s kitchen, fully equipped for relaxed dining, seamlessly connects to an inviting living area. Each of the four jewel-toned bedrooms, reflecting Mirtilla’s Italian family memories, offers a unique palette, from deep greens to warm ochres. Murano glass fixtures, Salvador Dalí prints, and layered materials of linen, wood, and stone create an elevated yet cozy atmosphere. Skylit rain showers enhance the outdoor connection, providing tranquil moments immersed in nature.

Adjacent to the main residence, a minimalist guest house features wood-paneled walls and a custom platform bed, perfectly positioned for stargazing. The outdoor areas serve as an extension of the home, featuring a desert garden by Geoponika, a 30-foot pool, and courts for bocce and pickleball, along with a specially designed dining area, inviting guests to seamlessly transition between relaxation and recreation.
