Off-White™ has officially closed its flagship store in New York City, the EM PTY GALLERY.
Founded by Virgil Abloh in 2017 in Soho, this unique venue was more than just a retail space; it functioned as a dynamic gallery showcasing rotating exhibitions, with Off-White™ products serving as part of the artistic decor. This innovative approach was Abloh’s answer to the conventional retail landscape of the time and represented the brand’s inaugural store in the U.S. Its closure signifies the end of an important chapter.
After Abloh’s passing, stylist and former Dazed editor-in-chief Ib Kamara took on the role of art and image director for Off-White™. While Kamara’s contributions have been positively received, the brand has faced challenges in establishing a strong identity without its founder. Over the past four years, Off-White™ has shut down all six of its stores in China, although it continues to operate in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
In September of the previous year, LVMHsold Off-White LLC, the parent company of the Off-White™ brand, to Bluestar Alliance, a brand management firm. The financial specifics of the transaction were not disclosed, but this sale positioned the Abloh-founded brand within Bluestar Alliance’s growing portfolio, which includes brands like Hurley, Scotch & Soda, Bebe, English Laundry, and Brookstone. LVMH expressed confidence that Bluestar Alliance would be the ideal partner to uphold Abloh’s legacy.
