After a week of speculation, the fashion world has officially appointed Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez as Loewe’s new Co-creative directors, effective April 7. The duo, known for their work in New York, succeeds the esteemed Jonathan Anderson. Although they may not yet be widely recognized outside industry circles, their designs have graced red carpets and street style photos, often worn by iconic figures like the Olsen twins and Chloë Sevigny.
McCollough and Hernandez co-founded Proenza Schouler during their final year at Parsons in 2002. Their thesis collection was purchased in full by the luxury retailer Barneys, propelling Proenza Schouler into the spotlight of New York’s fashion scene. The brand quickly became synonymous with refined style, avoiding fleeting trends. Amid the chaos of logomania, TikTok’s Y2K revival, and the rise of quiet luxury, the designers have remained committed to their vision, focusing on chic, comfortable silhouettes, sought-after bags, and distinctive footwear.
In 2008, Schouler the PS1 bag, which has since become an iconic handbag alongside theenci City and Louis Vuitton Speedy, as well as Jonathan Anderson’s celebrated Puzzle Bag. Nearly two decades later, the PS1 continues to maintain its timeless and practical appeal.
As the post-pandemic fashion landscape shifted towards more whimsical designs and an engaging online presence, many believe McCollough and Hernandez’s design philosophy and strong celebrity connections will resonate well commercially.
Currently, there is no official successor named for Proenza Schouler, but the designers will continue to play a vital role in preserving the brand’s New York heritage. Following New York Fashion Week in February, the team released its first lookbook, photographed by Tim Elkaïm, indicating that operations remain steady.
McCollough and Hernandez are anticipated to make their runway debut this September, alongside notable brands like Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel, Louise Trotter’s Bottega Veneta, and Demna’s Gucci, with the identity of Balenciaga’s new designer still under wraps.
