We Want to See More of MJ on ‘The Kardashians’

As Season 6 of The Kardashians approaches its conclusion, it’s clear that the iconic family struggles to create fresh storylines without revisiting past events. This season featured Khloé Kardashian‘s awkward encounter with her ex-husband Lamar, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner appearing together occasionally, Kourtney Kardashian setting her boundaries, and Kim Kardashian overloading her agenda. Overall, the season unfolded as anticipated.

With each family member engrossed in their own lives, opportunities for them to unite were limited. North West’s appearance in a tribute for The Lion King drew the cousins together for a celebration. Kim’s birthday is another occasion that typically gathers many family members. However, one individual has consistently brought everyone together: the matriarch, Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon. Season 6 reaffirmed the audience’s desire for more scenes featuring MJ that highlight family unity.

More Scenes With MJ Is What ‘The Kardashians’ Needs

This season has included transparent filming opportunities, such as consulting a “wellness expert” or camping in Joshua Tree, where only Kim, Khloé, and their mother Kris Jenner participated. Kendall missed out on a chance to connect with a fellow health enthusiast due to her 818 Tequila “college tour.” The family acknowledges that Kourtney and Kylie will only join events that suit their schedules and moods, indicating that the era of filming together and sharing genuine thoughts about each other’s lives is fading.

Recently, MJ has become the exception, the one who can still gather the Kardashian family members together. Her knack for bringing out the best in her grandchildren and uniting her great-grandchildren makes MJ an essential presence on The Kardashians. The show would benefit from having a figure like MJ who can foster family connections.

MJ remains lively and sharp, though her health is a valid concern as she ages. Last year, she faced a significant loss with the unexpected passing of her daughter, Kris’ sister Karen Houghton. This loss deeply affected both MJ and Kris, who found it challenging to express their feelings on camera. Kris seemed to prioritize professionalism over emotional honesty, missing an opportunity for deeper connection during their grieving process.

Season 6 Showed How Much MJ Needs Her Family

A phone call from Kris to her mother while getting ready for an event earlier this season highlighted MJ’s need for care. Despite making promises similar to Kim’s about slowing down, Kris struggles to maintain a clear schedule. It was heartbreaking to see Kris’s distress over her mother’s needs, opting to send an assistant instead of spending time with MJ herself. While professional obligations are important, Kris appears uncomfortable confronting grief or difficult emotions, preferring grand gestures over intimate moments, as noted by her daughter Kourtney.

What MJ truly needs from her family is more time together, which aligns with the show’s needs as well. More family interactions would lead to authentic moments on the series, moving away from the overly staged events that have become the norm. Kourtney has pointed out that while the family excels in celebrating significant occasions, they struggle with addressing each other’s feelings in real-time. Although Kourtney missed the extravagant party Kris organized for MJ, she expressed her intent to spend quality time with her grandmother and newborn great-grandson. These intimate family moments, mixed with the expected glamorous events like the Met Gala and Kim’s SNL appearances, are precisely what The Kardashians needs as it moves forward.
