It’s confirmed, Sean Baker‘s Anora achieved the highest number of wins at the 97th Academy Awards. Following the announcement of Anora as Best Picture, the film secured five out of six nominations, including Lead Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing, Supporting Actor, and Best Director. The only nomination it did not win was for Supporting Actor, where Yura Borisov lost to Kieran Culkin. The film triumphed over competitors like The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked for the Best Picture accolade. Notably, Baker has matched Walt Disney for the record of the most wins in a single night, a record set by Disney in 1954. Baker is the first to achieve such a feat for one project in a single night.
Anora, featuring Mikey Madison ( Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ), narrates the story of Anora (Madison), a sex worker who falls for the son of a Russian oligarch, leading to a Cinderella-like scenario that unravels when their marriage news reaches his family in Russia. Prior to the Oscars, Anora approached the $40 million mark globally at the Box Office, having been produced on a budget of $6 million, thus making a significant profit. The film also boasts an impressive 93% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
What Other Notable Events Occurred at the 97th Oscars?
In other news, The Brutalist won three awards, with Adrien Brody in the lead role. This postwar film received accolades for Best Lead Actor, Cinematography, and Original Score. Conclave secured one win for Adapted Screenplay, penned by Peter Straughan. Both Conclave star Ralph Fiennes and Brody were strong contenders for Lead Actor, with some speculating that Timothée Chalamet might have taken the award for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
In 2024, Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer dominated the Oscars, winning seven awards, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. It also claimed Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor.
Anora is currently available for streaming. You can find the complete list of Oscar winners here. Stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates.
