Jasmine Mansbridge: Postcards from Another Realm

Mansbridge’s artwork captivates with a subtle allure rather than loud spectacle, drawing viewers into reflective spaces where form and emotion intertwine. They serve as gateways to “imagined worlds” and “inner landscapes.”

Creating from her studio in Hamilton, Australia, Mansbridge employs a process that is both meticulous and respectful. She begins with fine pencil lines on linen, a deliberate homage to the material traditions of Indigenous artists she grew up among. These delicate marks remain visible beneath layers of white gesso and paint, maintaining the fragile essence of the artist’s touch. Mansbridge reflects on the poignant tension between the artist and the artwork, contemplating what is gained and lost when creation unfolds. “There is something actually quite painful about covering up these marks,” she shares. “So I wanted to preserve the line; I wanted to preserve the human mark.”

This commitment to origin imbues her architectural forms with unexpected warmth. Her creations, though carefully crafted, retain the essence of the human spirit. While her visual language draws from sacred design and mathematical principles, her paintings remain far from cold. They are meditative, organic, and softly luminous. In Mansbridge’s view, geometry transforms from a rigid structure into a redemptive force. “Humans are soft structures,” she explains, “but everything around us is underpinned by mathematical, geometric systems. For instance, even the energy field around us is structured and gridded.” For Mansbridge, painting harmonizes the organic with the constructed, the visible with the unseen, and the rational with the intuitive.

A deeply personal and spiritual artist, her work is grounded in ritual, mindfulness, and a profound curiosity for the unseen. Her creations stem not just from imagination but from dreams—visions from an “inner cosmos” made tangible through hours of focused effort and a Surrealist inclination to delve into the subconscious. Time serves as both a medium and a material for Mansbridge. Her compositions develop gradually, often over several weeks, and once initiated, cannot be altered. “The design is one go,” she states. “There’s not much room for a mistake.” This high-stakes precision coexists with a philosophy of presence: to engage fully, allowing what needs to surface, and to release attachment. “This work supports my life, and my life supports my work. If I look after the work, the work will take care of me.”

Her recent series for Rise Art, inspired by a journey to India, manifests as “a constellation of contemplative spaces.” “ Postcards came from India. This country is just so dense and colourful and impactful,” she reminisces. “Everything is always organically unfolding.” These pieces resonate with the echoes of ancient observatories or sacred architecture, structures crafted not only to accommodate human bodies but also to gesture towards the infinite.

Notably, Mansbridge’s father was a minister. In a time when the term “spiritual” often feels diluted, Mansbridge presents something more grounded and embodied. Influenced by her father’s belief that “all we cannot see is equal in value to all we can,” she approaches her practice with reverence—for mystery, for process, and for the unseen aspects of life. Even the rise of artificial intelligence piques her interest. “My work is a question rather than an answer,” she states. It encourages stillness, introspection, and a re-centering of the self. “To think more presently about their movements in life… I want people to ask: Who are you? And where are you going?”

Mansbridge’s nomadic childhood, characterized by frequent relocations and minimal possessions, shapes her perspective. She recalls a lack of television, which pushed her to find other sources of inspiration. Vivid memories include lying on a couch, admiring her grandmother’s paintings. “My grandmother was a talented painter,” she shares. “It was her works that survived our frequent moves and are deeply etched in my memory to this day.” These artworks, depicting far-off places like Hong Kong, acted as postcards from other realms, nurturing her imagination and serving as a visual dialogue that catalyzed her ability to envision new worlds.

Remaining open to new paths and discoveries is not just a theme in Mansbridge’s art; it is a guiding principle in her life. She describes herself as a “vessel”: open, porous, and committed to the creative process. “I’m just a conduit,” she explains, “for people to connect with their own stories and their own presence.” Her art serves as an offering—a quiet gesture of presence, care, and communion. It is rooted in her own experiences of grief and loss, yet always reaches outward. “My ultimate intention is to make work that is soothing and speaks to the shared, often unspoken, emotional currents that bind us.”

Instead of seeking closure, her work invites viewers to embrace the mystery and the process—an invaluable stance in a world increasingly fixated on quick solutions. Perhaps her most profound gift is the gentle reminder that beyond what we can see, within the chaos of existence, there remains space for wonder.
