Indian artist Sohrab Hura has received the Eye Art & Film Prize 2025, an annual accolade that honors an artist whose work merges visual arts and cinema. This recognition includes a €30,000 ($33,800) grant for a solo exhibition at Amsterdam’s Eye Filmmuseum, which administers the award.

The jurors noted, “Hura’s work is characterized by its emotional depth, innovative form, and a daring exploration of the intersection between art and film.”

Born in Chinsurah, India in 1981, Hura initially did not pursue photography, opting instead for a master’s degree at the Delhi School of Economics. His journey into photography began in college when his father gifted him a Nikon FM10 camera.

Today, Hura is acclaimed for his surreal photography and films that explore themes of social and political identity. His renowned photobook trilogy Sweet Life includes Life is Elsewhere (2015), A Proposition for Departure (2017), and Look It’s Getting Sunny Outside!!! (2018), which reflect his relationship with his mother, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia when he was 17.

Hura alternates between film and still photography, often depicting the diverse landscapes, climates, and cultures of India, capturing moments from daily life. His photographic series, such as “Snow” and “The Song of Sparrows in a Hundred Days of Summer,” respond to the country’s seasonal extremes. His early project, “Land of a Thousand Struggles” (2005–06), documented a grassroots political movement advocating for social security in rural India.

Last year, Hura’s first U.S. survey, titled “Mother,” was held at MoMA PS1. He has also had recent solo exhibitions at Experimenter in Mumbai and Peckham 24 in London, among others. Hura is a member of the Magnum Photos cooperative.

Since its inception in 2015, the Eye Art & Film Prize has recognized artists such as Chia-Wei Hsu in 2024, Garrett Bradley in 2023, and Saodat Ismailova in 2022. The first recipient of the prize was German filmmaker Hito Steyerl.
