  • Pierpaolo Piccioli has been appointed as the new creative director for Balenciaga.
  • The former Valentino designer will commence his position on July 10.
  • His inaugural collection for the brand is set to be unveiled in October.

After much speculation, Pierpaolo Piccioli has officially been named Balenciaga’s creative director. Piccioli, who previously worked at Valentino, will begin his new role on July 10, with his first collection debuting in October.

In his statement, Piccioli expressed, “Balenciaga is what it is today thanks to all the people who have paved the way. In all its phases, while constantly evolving and changing, it has never lost track of the House’s aesthetic values. What I am receiving is a brand full of possibilities that is incredibly fascinating.”

Piccioli departed from Valentino in March of last year after 25 years, including 16 as creative director. He had already left the brand at the time of the announcement, meaning his Fall 2024 collection, showcased during Paris Fashion Week, was his last for Valentino.

He will take over Balenciaga from Demna, who is set to present his final couture collection for the brand this July before moving to Gucci. Demna is credited with transforming Balenciaga into a highly sought-after label, known for his dramatic fashion week presentations and innovative designs.

Piccioli is recognized for his unique couture style and vibrant color palettes, particularly the successful Valentino Pink. His approach is expected to differ significantly from Demna’s, reflecting a distinct artistic vision. “I must first and foremost thank Demna,” Piccioli added. “I’ve always admired his talent and vision. I couldn’t ask for a better passing of the torch. This gives me the chance to shape a new version of the Maison, adding another chapter with a new story.”

Balenciaga CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli expressed enthusiasm for this “new era” under Piccioli, stating, “[Pierpaolo’s] creative vision will thrive, and he will perfectly interpret the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga, building on the House’s bold creativity, rich heritage, and strong culture.”

Francesca Bellettini, Kering Deputy CEO, remarked, “[Pierpaolo] is one of the most talented and celebrated designers of today. His mastery of Haute Couture, his creative voice, and his passion for savoir-faire made him the ideal choice for the House.”

With his innovative design skills and strong following, Piccioli is well-prepared to excel in this prominent role. The specifics of his Balenciaga vision remain to be seen, but anticipation builds for his debut collection in October.
