Richard Curtis’s signature blend of sweet and satirical writing has garnered both acclaim and critique, but Love Actually stands out for its complexity, thanks to its ensemble cast. As is often the case with films featuring multiple intertwining narratives, some storylines resonate more than others. The film notably favors its male characters, expecting female characters to be accommodating and forgiving, regardless of their ages. This disparity is especially evident in the contrasting arcs of Keira Knightley and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who are closer in age than the film suggests.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Keira Knightley Are Only Four Years Apart

Knightley and Brodie-Sangster are central to two of the film’s most memorable storylines, one more innocent than the other. Brodie-Sangster plays Sam, who is navigating his relationship with his stepfather, Daniel ( Liam Neeson ), after the death of his mother, Joanna. Encouraged to pursue his crush, also named Joanna ( Olivia Olson ), Sam participates in a school performance. In contrast, Knightley portrays Juliet, freshly married to Peter ( Chiwetel Ejiofor ), whose narrative largely revolves around Peter’s best friend, Mark ( Andrew Lincoln ). Mark’s initial coldness towards Juliet masks his deep affection for her. Despite the actors’ similar ages—Brodie-Sangster was 13 during filming and Knightley was 17—their characters are depicted at vastly different life stages. Sam is portrayed as a young boy experiencing love for the first time, while Juliet is a married woman with two men vying for her affection.

The age difference becomes more pronounced when considering their respective actions. Sam’s storyline is heartfelt and sincere, allowing Brodie-Sangster to authentically express a young boy’s struggle with loss and love while connecting with his stepfather. Conversely, Juliet’s arc raises discomfort, as the film appears to romanticize Mark’s behavior, which borders on obsession, towards a woman he has never openly declared his feelings for. Despite being the object of affection for both Mark and Peter, Juliet lacks agency and depth, contrasting sharply with Sam’s character development. This sends a troubling message, particularly as Knightley shares scenes with older co-stars.

‘Love Actually’ Hasn’t Aged Well

Love Actually highlights the disparity in how male and female characters are portrayed in Hollywood, particularly when examining the contrasting career trajectories of Brodie-Sangster and Knightley. Brodie-Sangster successfully continued to portray youthful roles for nearly another decade, landing a leading part in the family series Nanny McPhee and later appearing in The Maze Runner. In contrast, Knightley was quickly typecast into mature romantic roles opposite significantly older actors, starring in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and Pride & Prejudice, without the opportunity to play younger characters as Brodie-Sangster did.

There is a noticeable disparity in quality among the various storylines inLove Actually. The more comedic narratives, like Hugh Grant‘s portrayal of a lovestruck Prime Minister and Bill Nighy as a rock star, shine due to their lighthearted intent. In contrast, the more earnest romantic plots, such as Colin Firth‘s character’s silent infatuation, lack the same ironic charm. Love Actually contains both delightful moments and those that feel off-putting, with the age gap between Knightley and Brodie-Sangster serving as a clear example of this imbalance.
