As the saying goes, “less is more,” but what happens when this philosophy is applied to relationships? This week’s episode of Elsbeth showcases a confrontation between the extravagant Elsbeth ( Carrie Preston ) and minimalism expert Freya Frostad ( Mary-Louise Parker ), following the mysterious death of Freya’s husband in their hot tub. The narrative pushes all characters, especially Elsbeth, to evaluate their attachments—whether to possessions or relationships. It’s a lot to unpack, but let’s delve into it!
Mary-Louise Parker Navigates Relationship Clutter in ‘Elsbeth’ Season 2 Episode 16

The episode opens with Freya, her husband Axel ( Will Swenson ), and their partner Taylor ( Jess Darrow ) discussing their shared calendar—an old-school handwritten version rather than a digital one. Freya feels neglected as the calendar seems to favor Axel and Taylor’s time together. Although Taylor invites her to join, Freya opts out due to her distaste for the hot tub they frequent. After some discussion, they agree to spend one-on-one time together the following day.
Freya surprises Taylor with a gift to celebrate six months of their relationship: a decorative storage box. However, to keep it, Taylor must part with one of her possessions to adhere to Freya’s rule of having only “44 items.” Freya advocates for minimalism, but it’s unclear if this applies to furniture or just personal items. Later, during a private moment, Axel gifts Taylor a gold pendant, which Freya notices and finds infuriating, leading her to take matters into her own hands.
That night, Freya and Taylor enjoy their hotel stay, while Axel is left alone in the hot tub. Freya, harboring resentment, monitors the hot tub via an app and discovers a clog caused by Axel’s hair and the pendant. When she activates the cleaning device, it inadvertently traps Axel inside, leading to his tragic demise.
Upon discovering Axel’s body, Freya and Taylor are devastated. Elsbeth arrives with cookies for her friend Kaya ( Carra Patterson ), who is on her first case as a detective. However, the investigating officer, Detective Edwards ( Micaela Diamond ), believes the incident is straightforward due to the commonality of hot tub accidents. Elsbeth, however, is determined to dig deeper, despite Edwards’s warnings.
Freya’s anxiety about Elsbeth’s unkempt appearance and the crumbs she leaves behind indicates her priorities. As Elsbeth investigates further, Freya offers to help her declutter, a move that distracts from the investigation.
Elsbeth Struggles with Letting Go in Season 2 Episode 16
At the precinct, Elsbeth seeks guidance from Kaya, who is hesitant to accept help. Meanwhile, Edwards uncovers Axel’s medical history, revealing a series of unfortunate accidents that suggest foul play. Elsbeth grapples with the implications of these findings and reflects on her own relationships, particularly her past with her ex-husband and their son Teddy ( Ben Levi Ross ).
As Elsbeth navigates her own emotional clutter, she learns from Freya that letting go of material possessions can lead to clarity. However, Elsbeth’s attachment to her belongings complicates her ability to focus on the case. Freya insists she can dispose of items for Elsbeth, which leads to an amusing yet revealing session where Elsbeth discovers she has accumulated far more than 44 items.
In the meantime, Teddy grapples with his relationship with Roy ( Hayward Leach ) and the ultimatum he has received. This subplot highlights the theme of commitment and fear of losing individuality in relationships.
Elsbeth and Edwards Find Common Ground in Season 2 Episode 16

Elsbeth and Edwards uncover crucial evidence suggesting Axel fought against the hot tub’s suction, which complicates the narrative of an accidental death. They explore the mechanics of the hot tub, leading to the revelation that its design may have contributed to the tragedy. Freya’s emotional manipulation becomes evident as she feigns distress over Axel’s death while subtly steering the investigation away from her involvement.
The episode culminates in a montage showcasing the characters’ growth. Taylor finds new connections, Teddy decides to commit to Roy, and Elsbeth embraces her cherished belongings while maintaining her long-distance relationship with Angus. The narrative leaves viewers questioning Freya’s true motives and whether her minimalist philosophy truly aligns with her actions.
