Initially, my journey into reality television encompassed a variety of shows, from dating series to competitive formats and The Housewives franchise. However, I never quite understood the allure of the Bachelor franchise and its spin-offs. Though I occasionally tuned in for seasons featuring leads I admired, such as Joey Graziadei, my overall interest remained limited. Many contestants seemed more focused on leveraging their platform for social media fame rather than genuine connections. Yet, I decided to give The Golden Bachelor a shot, intrigued by its older, more seasoned participants. What truly resonated with me were the women featured on the show.
‘The Golden Bachelor’ Offers What ‘The Bachelor’ Lacks
The contestants from the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelor instilled a sense of admiration and respect for this spin-off. These women are experienced mothers who prioritize their families, joining the show for sincere reasons, especially as they navigate life beyond their prime years. Unlike the younger contestants of previous seasons, they are not seeking influencer status but rather a meaningful chance at love, making it clear from the outset that their children and families come first.
This refreshing perspective is seldom seen in The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, where many leads and participants are young and childless. The selflessness displayed in The Golden Bachelor is striking. My enjoyment of this season stood out compared to the many others I had watched, as the focus on family over romance is a quality The Bachelor lacks.
‘The Golden Bachelor’ Contestants Exemplify Selflessness
When I decided to watch Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor, I quickly grew fond of the leading lady from the first season of The Golden Bachelorette, Joan Vassos. Early in the season, Joan had to leave unexpectedly due to complications her daughter faced after childbirth. Despite the early stage of the season, I felt that Gerry and Joan had great chemistry and an enjoyable group date. When Joan opted to self-eliminate to support her daughter, Gerry’s visible disappointment was palpable. He expressed, “I understand, I get it. But I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. I was so excited this morning. I was out of bed dancing. I was thrilled that we had a conversation like we did and there’s a moral compass that we both share and sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest.”
That moment made me realize, Joan is an incredible mother. She joined The Golden Bachelor hoping to find love again after the loss of her husband. Although she and Gerry appeared to connect well, she prioritized her responsibilities as a mother, demonstrating a commitment that is often overlooked in these shows. After the episode aired, Joan shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking everyone for their concern and emphasizing that “once a mom, always a mom and sometimes the timing doesn’t work out with finding love.”
During her time as the leading lady on The Golden Bachelorette, Joan expressed her worries to Nancy Hulkower from Gerry’s season, concerned that she might be selfish while trying to honor her late husband. However, her thoughts were those of a caring mother, not selfishness. Watching both The Golden Bachelor and The Golden Bachelorette has opened my eyes to the selfless pursuit of love these women embody while prioritizing family—a narrative that is often missing from The Bachelor franchise. The Golden Bachelor is available for streaming on Prime Video in the US.
